Income Protection

What would happen if you were suddenly unable to work due to an illness or injury? 50% of American Households would have financial trouble within 30 days 25% would have trouble immediately Only 1 in 4  employees insure their income……   Think about it. How long would you be able to make your mortgage or rent payment, buy groceries, or pay your credit card bills without feeling the pinch?   That’s where disability insurance comes in. With careful strategic planning, we can tailor a program that includes income protection for you and your employees.   Call or email for a comprehensive benefit package that attracts and retains key employees. Repeal and Replace – Doesn’t Fix the Problem

I recently read a synopsis of the Republican House bill to Repeal and Replace Obamacare (here is a great explanation of what stays and what goes). As I read through the proposed changes, I was unclear what issues the Republicans were attempting to fix.  They have had 6 years to rally the troops and deliver meaningful reform to the current healthcare debacle.  It is clear that no one on the Republican side wanted to deal with the fact that healthcare is hard. As an employee benefits consultant who deals with this legislation every day, I have some pretty defined ideas about the...

Fair Medical Pricing

Fair Medical Pricing?  Here it is. A new payment methodology gives the YOU pricing power over medical procedures. Too good to be true?  I thought so.  However, I have a client that is utilizing this approach, and the results have been dramatic. Contact me to discuss how we can change the way you manage your Health Benefits forever.  You may have just looked at your last medical increase. Here is a 2-minute video that explains the program. https://vimeo.com/123839661...

How Much is this going to Cost?

Below is a video from the website Vox.com that is one of the best visual representation of trying to determine the cost of a medical procedure before it is done…. Please click on the link to watch it, and read on for my thoughts. It is a little long, but really entertaining. https://youtu.be/Tct38KwROdw Thoughts… Well, what can I say, the family in the video has some great insurance- 90% coinsurance and no mention of a deductible (maybe they already paid it for the year?), sign me up! But I think the big take away is the accurate depiction of our current claims system.  This is...

Are You Retaining the Right Talent?

Are you retaining the Right Talent? If not it is going to be almost impossible to hire the best talent, because top performers like to work with other committed top performers. As we find ourselves in a tighter and tighter labor market, every executive should be focused on retaining your top employees.  Without these top performers, hiring the right/best new employees becomes much more difficult. We can keep ourselves busy till 2020 reading articles that will tell you how to retain your top talent.  The thing all of these articles miss is that there is no one size fits all answer.  You need...

Maybe This is Wrong in Healthcare?

See that Huge Yellow wall? That is growth in the Healthcare industry of ADMINISTRATORS…… Not Doctors, Not Nurses, Not Pharmacists- Administrators! The black line is per capita healthcare spending. It INCREASED 2300% between 1970 and 2009. When the US gets around to having a REAL discussion about cost containment in Healthcare, I think I know one of the places we can cut back. France has private doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies. Their insurance company’s administration costs are below 5%[1], in America, it is closer to 20%. Healthcare can be reformed, and other countries have some pretty good ideas. Maybe it is time we looked at some of them? Until...

Marketplace Appeal

You may receive notices from the Marketplace indicating that your business may be subject to the shared responsibility payment because an employee requested and received a subsidy. You can appeal this notice, however, the window is very short- 90 days.  So it is important to act quickly. Employers may appeal the notice if the employee waived affordable minimum value coverage or enrolled in employer-sponsored minimum essential coverage for 2016.   The appeal may determine that an employee received subsidies through the Marketplace at the same time the employer offered him or her affordable health coverage.   If the employer is successful, the Marketplace...

Score One for the Little Guy

FL HB 221 passed at the final moments of the legislative session, and it is a win for anyone who has ever received a surprise Out of Network bill for services performed at an in-network hospital.  Current law allowed a non-network provider to pass along a balance bill to PPO and EPO members even though they were delivering services at a facility in the insurance network. In recent years this has escalated, with providers and insurance companies playing a game of one-ups-manship, leaving the policyholder to mop up (really- pay up) the difference. HB 221 ends this.  For services provided at in-network...

Help a Beneficiary Out!

There is currently a bill working its way through the Florida legislature that would require life insurance companies to attempt to find beneficiaries for deceased insureds.  The bill would require the insurance companies to review the Social Security Death Master list once a year and search for the beneficiaries of the deceased’s’ life insurance contracts. You can review the article here (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/business/consumer/fl-life-insurance-death-search-bill-20160222-story.html ) This would be a huge win for consumers, as the insurance industry sits on billions of unclaimed benefits year after year, earning interest on the money.  Currently there is no requirement for finding the beneficiaries and paying out the...

ACA Changes and Delays

During my conversations with my clients, I am often asked what is going to happen to the Affordable Care Act once the new President is elected, especially if it is a Republican candidate.  My answer is always the same. IT WON'T BE REPEALED: I believe that we have traveled too far down the road for an outright repeal of the legislation.  Businesses large and small have spent vast resources on complying with the intricacies of the law, and to suddenly repeal it, would throw the market into chaos.  It would also displace millions of lower income Americans from coverage they were able...
