24 Jun Welcome to Health Insurance
As someone who is immersed in medical insurance on a daily basis, I sometimes forget that there is a whole population of people out there that have never had the ability to have and interact with medical insurance.
I met with a client the other day, and we were discussing some of the questions that were being asked by some of the employees who had just become eligible for the benefit plan under the ACA in January.
A common one was why they had to pay anything at the doctors, since they were paying for it out of their paycheck (oh- if it could only be done that way- a plan with no other costs than the premium!)
That got me to thinking that we do a pretty bad job explaining medical insurance to people who have never had it or used it before. We are always concerned at the Open Enrollment meetings talking about the differences between the plans from year to year, the costs, and a smattering of advice.
So to help everyone who has a population that is dealing with medical insurance (please- it is medical insurance- not health insurance. I can’t insure your health. I can insure you for medical expenses) for the first time, we found an excellent video from the Kaiser Family Foundation that explains Medical insurance, it components, and an individual’s responsibilities within the system.
Enjoy and share!
